From an analytical point of view, it’s not possible to talk about post-punk without talking about Joy Division. Nor is it possible to talk about post-punk without mentioning the very important role of the bass as a leading instrument. So it’s understandable how transcendent Peter Hook, former Joy Division / New Order bassist, is in the history of underground music.
Next week Peter Hook & The Light will be live in concert at the Docks in Lausanne, an opportunity that the Swiss journalist, producer and web editor David Glaser of Suississimo didn’t wanted to miss. So what do you do when you want to interview a musician like Peter Hook? Easy, just pick up the phone and call him. Yeah right, well, David is the one who has the unknown phone number and the pleasure of talking with Hooky!
Listen below to the result of the interview call. In the first part Hook mentions the Swiss crowd, The Light, New Order, Wham, George Michael…
“In Switzerland we got a bad reaction from the crowd when our equipment broke down”
In the second part Hook mentions New Order, Rob Gretton, Tony Wilson and the situation in Ukraine and the Middle East.
“New Order died when Rob Gretton died”
And in the third part Hook mentions Joy Division, Ian Curtis, Sex Pistols, John Lydon, Glen Matlock…
“After seeing Sex Pistols live, I told Barney (Sumner), we should form a band”.
And finally here is a photo of the two characters in the pleasant conversation.
Be sure to visit David Glaser’s blog Suississimo. It’s a work of more than 10 years and contains texts on very diverse topics. There you can also find the transcription of the interview in French.
